UGC creator or influencer: which one does your property actually need
One sells you an audience. The other sells you files you own. Buying the wrong one is the most common way a property wastes a content budget.
These two get used like the same word and they're completely different purchases. Properties waste a lot of money on that confusion.
The question that sorts it: are you buying their audience, or are you buying footage you own?
The actual difference
| Influencer | UGC creator | |
|---|---|---|
| What you're buying | Access to their followers | Video and photo files for your channels |
| Where it goes live | Their account | Your account, your ads, your site, your OTA listing |
| What to check | Reach, views, who follows them, engagement | Portfolio, hooks, editing, on-camera ability |
| Do followers matter | Yes, that's the product | No, the work is the product |
| What you own after | A post on their page | The files |
An influencer with 200k followers can be a poor content producer. A creator with 900 followers can make the best video your property has ever posted. Those aren't contradictions, they're different jobs.
When you actually want an influencer
You want reach, borrowed from someone your guests already trust.
- You're launching something new and need people to hear about it fast
- You're going after a specific market and they have that exact audience
- You want the credibility of a real recommendation to their people
Check reach before you sign anything. Views, not followers. Where their audience actually lives. Whether people comment or just scroll past. And know that when you host someone in exchange for a post, that's a paid relationship and it has to be disclosed as one.
When you actually want a UGC creator
You have channels. You have ad budget. You have a booking page and an OTA listing. What you don't have is enough good video to fill any of it.
- Your Instagram is starving and the photos are three years old
- You want to run paid social and you've got nothing worth putting money behind
- Your booking page and OTA listing are still wide static shots of an empty room
- You need the same property shown five ways for five different guest types
This is the one most properties actually need, and it's the cheaper of the two to start with, because you're not paying for anyone's audience.
Why content usually wins first
An influencer post runs once. It gets its views over about 48 hours and then it's a link in a spreadsheet.
Files you own keep working. The same video goes on your Reels, into a paid ad, onto the booking page, into an email, onto your OTA listing. You can cut it three ways next month without paying anyone. Twelve months later it's still yours.
That's not an argument against influencers. It's an argument for getting your own content library sorted first, so that when you do pay for reach, the reach points at something good.
The mistake I see most
A property hosts a creator for three nights, gets one post on the creator's page, and comes away with nothing they can use themselves.
If you're covering a stay, get files out of it. Put it in writing before anyone arrives: how many finished videos, how many photos, whether you get raw footage, and how long you can use it. A stay is real money. Treat it like a budget line, not a favour.
How to decide in a minute
Ask what's actually missing right now.
- Nobody knows we exist and the right people need to hear about us. That's reach. Hire an influencer.
- People find us and what they see is weak. That's content. Hire a UGC creator.
- Both. Fix the content first, then buy reach that points at it.
Number three is most properties, and the order matters.
